Labels represent an exogenous recognition of the exceptional character of a territory. Not only do they serve to enhance the sustainable dimensions of a territory, they also become essential promotional and protection tools in a context of growing competition between destinations.

The Ville Durable et Innovante (VDI) label is an initiative co-developed by Efficacity and Cerema. Its aim is to support local authorities in the development, implementation and recognition of their sustainable development strategies. Complementing the "Climat Air Énergie" and "Économie Circulaire" labels of ADEME's "Territoire Engagé Transition Écologique" program, the VDI Label assesses a local authority on 3 major thematic axes: "social cohesion and quality of life", "economic transition and resilience", a transversal axis "innovation" and a complementary axis "governance". It is inspired by international best practices, such as the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ISO standards on sustainable cities and the European Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities (RFSC).
