SUMMARY
Europe faces a triple imperative of protection, preparation and transformation to meet the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced: climate change and the collapse of biodiversity. How can we transform human life quickly enough to enable 8 billion people to live sustainably and peacefully within the planet's limits? While Europe cannot meet this challenge alone, the authors believe it can lead the global community towards the systemic transformation that this decade and the next will inevitably demand. It will only be able to exercise leadership if it strengthens both its internal cohesion and its ability to speak with one voice, and if it promotes a profound transformation of the global economy.
