"Commitment to sustainable tourism" in New Zealand

Benchmark SDG, Transition and Resilience Tourism

SUMMARY

Tourism is strategic for the New Zealand economy: it is the country's leading export sector (20.1% of exports) and national and international tourism spending represented, before the health crisis, 25.7 billion euros per year.

At the end of 2017, Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA), the sector's main trade association, launched the Tourism Sustainability Commitment ("Tourism Sustainability Commitment") to accompany the entire industry towards responsible tourism with positive impacts. At the time, 97% of TIA members were already convinced of its importance, so it was more a question of taking action than raising awareness.
