The "Agora for Tourism" in Bordeaux

Benchmark Governance and Partnerships SDG, Transition and Resilience Tourism
Agora Tourisme Bordeaux

SUMMARY

In May 2021, Bordeaux Métropole and the Office de Tourisme et des Congrès launched "L'Agora pour le tourisme": this participative approach aims to involve all stakeholders in repositioning the destination towards sustainable tourism development. The aim is to to "involve in the governance of the destination all types of people whose lives are impacted by our activity".. The aim of this collective approach is therefore to take greater account of the challenges faced by local stakeholders - particularly local residents - to ensure balanced tourism development. It also responds to changing demand: according to a recent Expedia study (2022), half of all travelers say they are willing to pay more to travel more responsibly. This new participative governance contributed to Bordeaux's 85.1% score in the latest GDS-Index ranking.
This publication details the various stages of the process, the results obtained, its innovations and limitations.
