SUMMARY

Villa Kujoyama, located in Kyoto, is one of France's most important cultural institutions abroad. Inspired by the model of the Villa Medici in Rome, it is an artists' residence associated with the French Institute of Japan. Built in 1991, Villa Kujoyama stands on the site of the former Institut franco-japonais du Kansai1, established in 1926 and relocated in 1936 near Kyoto University. The Villa was founded in a spirit of Franco-Japanese intellectual rapprochement. It welcomes creators, artists and researchers who wish to highlight Japanese culture in a purely professional way. Residencies at Villa Kujoyama are based on a double program: the first welcomes French designers, the second welcomes a French designer and a Japanese designer working on a joint project.
