ABSTRACT

While the word “territory” is primarily defined by its geographical scope (country, region, department, etc.), nearly half of all French people characterize it in terms of its history and culture. 91% of French people say they feel attached to their territory (which is not necessarily where they live), and 77% see themselves living there in the future

When asked about essential shops and services, 62% want access within 15 minutes. 95% even believe that a trip of more than 30 minutes to meet daily needs is unacceptable.

For 53% of those surveyed, elected officials are the most influential stakeholders in their region, ahead of business leaders (25%), shop owners (14%), and nonprofit leaders (8%). However, among younger generations (ages 18–24) and urban residents, business leaders are more widely perceived as key players. A “useful” business is, above all, one that produces, hires, and invests locally—even before its respect for the environment or its support for organizations. 77% of French people say that these actions have a positive impact on their perceptions and consumption choices.

Finally, the French aspire more to an “ecological” region (35%) than to a “productive” ” (20%), “connected” (16%), “safe” (16%), or “supportive” (8%).

Keywords: attachment to the region, biodiversity, local businesses and services, local development, economic vitality, study, survey, environment, funding, insecurity, housing, mobility, region, social issues, territory, aging population, France.

  • Online questionnaire.
  • Fieldwork: late December 2025.
  • Note: The territorial divisions correspond to the organization of the Caisses d’Épargne and do not always coincide with the administrative divisions of the regions.
