SUMMARY
The idea behind the creation of coworking spaces was to enable self-employed workers not to remain isolated at home, but to find a space for socializing comparable to that of a company. A few experiments had been tried out in major European cities (C-Base in Berlin in 1995, Schraubenfabrik in Vienna in 2002), but the first coworking space officially opened its doors in San Francisco in 2005.
Since then, the movement has spread throughout the world. It has surprised by its scope as much as the pace at which it has developed. According to The Global Coworking Survey 2017, there are more than 11,000 coworking spaces worldwide, and nearly a million people are thought to work in this type of venue. They are mostly located in Europe and North America, but are expanding on every continent, in cities of all sizes as well as in rural territories.
