ABSTRACT

"Branding a nation without a state: Catalonia's diplomatic relations"

Translated and adapted from " The Place Brand Observer " by the A&NMT Chair / June 10, 2015

"How do you represent and promote a stateless nation internationally? In their recent case study on Catalonia, published in the Journal of Place Branding and Public Diplomacy, Jordi de San Eugenio Vela and Jordi Xifra analyzed the diplomatic and branding strategy of this autonomous region of Spain that aspires to independence. Indeed, in recent years, the Catalan government's foreign policy has focused on public diplomacy and presenting Catalonia's cultural assets internationally. Their article examines the cultural diplomacy strategy developed by the Catalan autonomous region and its implementation with its innovative "2010-2015 Foreign Action Plan". We also invited the two authors to share their main research findings and the recent developments they have observed."
