SUMMARY

The Barcelona metropolitan area, made up of 36 municipalities, covers an area of just over 600 km² and is home to 3.2 million people (half the Catalan population), 1.6 million of whom live in the city center. Since the 90s, Spain in general, and Catalonia in particular, have enjoyed sustained economic growth, resulting in lower unemployment and improved living conditions for a majority of Spaniards.

Once dubbed the " Catalan Manchester " because it was hard hit by deindustrialization in the 1960s, Barcelona has since pursued ambitious urban renewal policies, capitalized on the 1992 Olympic Games and embarked on a shift towards tourism and the service economy, while relying on an industrial base that is still present in the metropolitan area (automotive, agri-food, chemical-pharmaceutical, etc.).
