In Austria, public transport services have been adapted to the rural nature of the country

Benchmark Rural territories

SUMMARY

Mobility is at the heart of many topical issues: equal access to services, ecology, innovation, and so on. Taking up this issue is therefore crucial for both metropolitan and rural areas. This is the approach taken by the Fuschlsee and Mondseeland (FUMO) region, a low-density area in north-western Austria. The region's public transport offer was poorly adapted. Both work and leisure areas were poorly served. The transport network did not meet people's daily commuting needs, with few bus stops and long waiting times. The use of the car became the easiest way to get around the area. A comprehensive plan for more sustainable mobility was therefore developed for 17 of the municipalities in the FUMO region.
