SUMMARY

Authors: Florence JANY-CATRICE & Grégory MARLIER, FMSH-WP-2020-147, Sept. 2020

In 2008, the authors developed a multidimensional indicator to estimate social well-being in the French regions for 2004. The result of collective deliberations, this indicator was selected by the Sustainable Development and Environment Commission of the Association of French Regions as part of its panorama of other wealth indicators, enabling French regions to share a common definition of the social development of territories (ARF, 2012). It was selected as one of the key indicators in Eva Sas' first bill (2014). This working paper updates and enriches this indicator, estimating its evolution over time and its level at the end of the 2010s.

The paper also reconstructs series based on the reconfiguration of the "new" French regions. It shows that some regions are very dynamic in terms of social health (Brittany, Pays de la Loire), while others are lagging far behind, in particular Hauts-de-France. Finally, it compares this social health with a multidimensional measure of ecological performance.
